RATING: **1/2
IF there is one thing I can say about Suria's latest offering, it is that Teman Anugerahku does not pretend to be some serious work of art.
The six-part drama is simply a vehicle for showcasing the four 2005 Anugerah finalists.
Their debut VCD album, Anugerah - Kau Bintangku (Anugerah - You Are My Star) reportedly sold more than 8,000 copies in the first month.
So, it is not surprising that Suria wants to maximise the guys' exposure and publicity.
Syed Azmir, Khairil Yusof, Khairul Anuar and Fauzie Laily (above, from left) play four close teenage pals whose friendship is put to the test when they separate after secondary school.
Izat (Khairul) is a hardworking junior college student whose snobby mother looks down on his friends and doesn't want him to hang out with them lest they lead him astray.
Syazwan (Syed Azmir) is the token playboy who is studying in polytechnic.
Zulkifli (Fauzie) is the slacker of the group and Syazwan's closest rival in love, while Shahril (Khairil) is the hardworking, sensible lad who has to work as an electronics store salesman to look after his foster mother.
Unfortunately, he also has a high-maintenance girlfriend who keeps sucking him dry.
While the Anugerah boys are naturals at singing, more classes with the pros are needed to hone their acting skills.
However, I must say that Syed Azmir and Khairil were a little bit more comfortable with their roles. They probably decided to play themselves, which is a good call.
On the other hand, Khairul and Fauzie seem to be trying a little too hard and, as a result, they look constipated.
The producers also tried to do too much themselves. They must have realised and understood that the drama was primarily targeted at the boys' screaming fans.
Which explains why they added some MTV-inspired elements to the show.I am sure it was meant to make the episodes look interesting but sadly, it ends up slowing the show's pace.
